Harbor Sweets
Harbor Sweets makes handmade chocolates. We designed three annual seasonal direct mail catalogs which reflected the high quality of their product since this was their corporate face to the public.
We also designed a packaging program including boxes, ribbons, and front and back labels which included images of the chocolates within the boxes.

The Challenge
The labels and boxes for the chocolates needed a major update. The colors originally chosen ran together making it difficult to read the labels. The printing process used was digital so color matching was difficult—not enough separation between logo, type and background of labels. Wanted a consistent "copper' box. Needed to differentiate between individual chocolates in boxes and collections of chocolates. Labels needed to be easily photographed for catalog purposes without retouching.
The Solution
Apex Production worked with Harbor Sweets to develop a box covered in copper paper for consistency. (They had been printed before.) Used a copper mesh ribbon on all boxes. Enlarged white type for logotype and secondary type solved the problem of readability. Re-drew a gaff rigged sloop for the Main Harbor Sweets logo and gave it s slight white outline to help it work with background colors. Designed a palette of colors for collections and individual chocolates so it was clear when entering any shop which chocolates were in each box. Designed back labels that had images of the chocolates contained in each box along with nutritional information,. area for bar code, freshness date, ingredient list, and basic information about Harbor Sweets.
The Results
The new colorful labels and consistent copper boxes made a nice presentation in the shops and in the catalogs making it easy to see at a glance which chocolates were in each box. Catalog photography no longer needed expensive retouching. Harbor Sweets was pleased with the results.
